Keyboard

Problem

Tips

Corrective Action

Should my keyboard be on my desk or on a keyboard tray.

These are the two primary options to position your keyboard and either one may be effective for you.

Worksurface

Keyboard Tray

A third position that some people use occasionally is to place the keyboard on their lap - we don't recommend you do this more than just occasionally.

Check out the TIPS to help you decide where to place your keyboard.

Desk - Pros and Cons

  • You don't have to worry about adjusting the keyboard tray; however is it very important to have the proper height worksurface.

  • With the keyboard on the desk you give up the ability to fine tune the height of the keyboard.

  • You have more room to position the keyboard on the worksurface.

  • You have closer access to the worksurface because you don't have to reach over the tray.

Keyboard tray - Pros and Cons

  • If you have to often reach to your worksurface the tray may limit free and easy access - this may be a significant problems for many shorter individuals with shorter arms.

  • You gain significant flexibility in adjusting the height and angle of the keyboard.

  • You have to make sure you have enough room on the tray for the mouse as well as the keyboard.
