I don't have enough light or have too much light to comfortably see in my office.

Individual perception of how much light is enough or too much can vary considerably based on individual issues including:

  • Light sensitivity - some individuals are more sensitive to light levels.

  • Age - we perceive less light with age and require more for comfortable viewing.

  • Job task - viewing computer monitors requires less light than reading hard copies.

Too Little

Symptoms:

  • Subjective reports of eye strain

  • Bending forward (out of good posture) to get closer to what you are reading.

Too Much

Symptoms:

  • Subjective reports of eye strain

  • Shielding your eyes with your hand (like a brim a baseball cap) provides relief

Too little light
  • Overhead lights - Check if any overhead lights are not working. Bulbs may have burned out or have been turned out. Contact your supervisor for assistance to get them replaced.

  •  Undercabinet lights - Check if any undercabinet lights are not working. Bulbs may have burned out or have been turned out. Contact your supervisor for assistance to get them replaced.

  • Task lights - Turn on desktop task lights or if needed add them. Go to Products to order.

Too much light

  • Overhead lights - Turn out overhead lights to reduce overall light levels. Talk with your neighbors to get a general consensus regarding light levels.  Contact your supervisor for assistance.

  •  Undercabinet lights - Turn off undercabinet lights.

  • Task lights - Turn off or redirect desktop task lights.

 

Add light:

  • Replace overhead light - contact your supervisor for assistance.

  • Turn on or replace undercabinet lights - contact your supervisor for assistance.

  • Add task lights - Go to Products to order.

Reduce light:

  • Turn out overhead lights - contact your supervisor for assistance.

  • Turn off undercabinet lights

  • Turn off or redirect task lights
